The LGBTQIA Council for the Kentucky Democratic Party is committed to advancing the rights and interests of LGBTQIA people in Kentucky. We believe in the importance of individual liberty and the right of all people, including LGBTQIA individuals, to live freely and without fear of discrimination or persecution. We believe all parents have the right to raise their children without fear of government overreach into their family’s decision to celebrate their LGBTQIA child. To achieve these goals, we support the following issues:
Anti-discrimination Laws
We believe that discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity should be illegal in all aspects of public life, including employment, housing, education, healthcare, and public accommodations.
We support legislation prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in Kentucky. We believe this ensures we respect the individual liberty of all people.
Marriage Equality
We believe that all couples of any gender or sexual orientation have the right to marry and enjoy marriage’s legal benefits and protections.
We believe respecting the individual liberty of all people demands we support marriage equality.
Transgender Rights
We believe that transgender individuals should have the right to live their lives openly and with dignity. We support legislation prohibiting discrimination against transgender individuals in all aspects of public life.
Including employment, housing, education, healthcare, and public accommodations, we believe this is a foundational element to respecting all people’s individual liberty.
Banning Conversion Therapy
Conversion therapy, which seeks to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, is harmful and unethical.
We support legislation banning conversion therapy in Kentucky and protecting minors from being subjected to this dangerous practice.
Healthcare
We believe all people, including LGBTQIA, should have access to affordable and comprehensive healthcare.
We support policies that expand access to healthcare for LGBTQIA individuals, including transgender healthcare, support for family planning, including gay, lesbian, transgender, and non-binary identifying families to have children, and mental health services.
Safe Schools
We believe every student deserves to feel safe and supported in school, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
We support policies that protect LGBTQIA students from bullying and harassment, provide them with resources and support, and promote inclusive education.
Support Democrats
We are Democrats organizing in our great commonwealth. As such, we seek to support LGBTQIA-identifying and allied candidates in elections at every level of government across Kentucky.
We aim to hold the Kentucky Democratic Party accountable for our goals of full LGBTQIA inclusion at all levels. We stand firmly against bigotry in any form, whether explicit or implicit. Our council seeks to educate, inform, and inspire everyone toward full inclusion in the LGBTQIA community.
