Reimagining the Monthly Meeting
I have been a member of the LGBTQIA Council for Kentucky Democrats for almost three years now. In that time, I have seen an incredible amount of growth and so much Pride throughout the Commonwealth. Our community continues to show up, support one another, and fight for visibility in every corner of Kentucky. But it is also clear that many of us are tired and stretched thin. We are all doing the work, often without enough resources to sustain it.
Over the past year, I have had the privilege of meeting so many of you in person at Pride events, rallies, and community meetings across the state. And while every county and story is unique, the needs I hear are the same: resources, funding, knowledge, and volunteers. These are not personal shortcomings. They are systemic challenges that our Executive Committee is actively working to address. I promise, yall, we hear you, and we are committed to building something stronger together.
To honor that commitment, our monthly meetings will be taking on a new format starting October 15. Each month, we will invite an expert in their field to lead a short program on a topic that impacts our community, from mental health and advocacy to organizing, leadership, and beyond. Afterward, we will take time to engage with one another, share perspectives, and connect around the discussion before wrapping up with official business and voting.
What we want most is for these gatherings to feel more engaging, inclusive, and supportive, where every member can share their voice, learn from others, and leave feeling connected and reenergized for the work ahead.
Because when the country, and sometimes even our own families, turn against us, this Council should be a place where we find solace. A place where we are reminded that we are not alone, that we belong here, and that we still have the power to shape the future together.
We know that caring for our mental health has to come first if we want to keep showing up for each other and for Kentucky. That’s why our first program, “Finding Light When the World Feels Heavy,” will focus on care, connection, and community. We’ll be joined by Carmellia Jackson of Haus of Sol, whose work reminds us that healing is part of organizing and both are how we move forward together. I hope to see you there!
